Attached below are lesson plans I used and created for each of the Blackfoot values. These lessons are specifically made for Grade 1/2 but can be easily adjusted to meet the needs of students in higher grade levels. The lessons I taught during my PSIII were the lessons on the values: Aatsimoyihkaan (prayer), Kimmapiiypitsinni (Kindness/Compassion), Innakotsiiysinni (Respect for others), and Aksitoiyipaitapiiysiini (being able to take on tasks independently)
These lessons are made quite general so teachers can easily change and adapt them to fit the needs of students in their classroom. Prior to teaching the value you can also go to the "11 values" tab to read more about the different Blackfoot values in order to adapt the lesson plan to fit your needs!
Kimmapiiypitsinni: Kindness/Compassion
This was the first value I introduced to the students. Prior to introducing this value it was necessary to teach them about who the Blackfoot people are, who Indigenous people are and why it is important to learn about these people and these values. The students became very excited to learn more and complete their kindness challenge!
Innakotsiiysinni (Respect for others),
This is the second value I taught to my Grade 1/2 students. Depending on the students in your class, this lesson could be changed to be two lessons over two days. The first lesson could review who the Blackfoot people are and why it is important to learn about them! There are resources for this under the 'resource' tab.
Aksitoiyipaitapiiysiini (being able to take on tasks independently)
This is the third lesson I taught to my Grade 1/2 students. Throughout my few months with the students, I noticed their lack of independence due to Covid and online learning. The majority of students had one-on-one support with their parents or caregivers for online learning. Entering back into in person school was a difficult transition for many students, especially such young students. With the Covid restrictions, students were not allowed to share items and all had their own desk and supplies. Many students struggled to keep their desks clean and find items they need, or struggled to complete tasks independently, This value was incredible helpful to teach the students about how to be independent while simultaneously teaching them another Blackfoot value. My students were excited to learn more and take on the challenge of trying things at least two times before asking for help!
Aatsimoyihkaan (prayer)
This is the fourth value I taught to the students. Their challenge for this value was 18 days of gratitude for our final 18 days before winter break. This ended up being something the entire school implemented! Our K-6 classrooms completed 12 days of gratitude for the final 12 school days before winter break. Each class submitted three things they were grateful for and each day they were posted in the foyer for all the students to see! This was one of my students' favourite values! Each day as I called their names for recess or the end of the day they would ask if they could tell me something they were grateful for as they left!
